Currently only one third of the global population is connected to the internet. That means that only a little above 2.7 billion people have access to the internet. The technology leaders have come together and launched a global partnership with the goal of making internet available to the next two third of the global population.
Facebook, Ericsson,MediaTek,Nokia, Opera and Samsung are the founding members of internet.org. Mark Zuckerberg said “Everything Facebook has done has been about giving all people around the world the power to connect. There are huge barriers in the developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy. Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges, including making internet access available to those who cannot currently afford it.” The founding members will launch joint projects, share knowledge and mobilize industry and governements to bring the world online.
